Counselling

WHAC offers a free one to one confidential counselling service to women and girls aged 14+, delivered by qualified volunteer counsellors in a non-clinical, safe setting.

It is:

  • Confidential
  • Non-judgmental
  • One to one
  • It enables you to explore your own thoughts and feelings

It is not:

  • Telling you what to do
  • An instant solution
  • On a fixed time scale
  • A medical service, although we have a lot of information and experience

"Being able to talk openly about problems, feelings, guilt and anxieties with someone who listened and was not judgemental was a great relief and helped regain my confidence" WHAC Counselling client

Who can benefit from counselling?

We all need someone who will listen sometimes, but a counsellor may be especially helpful for:

  • Bereavement/loss
  • Alcohol or drug issues
  • Marriage/relationship difficulties
  • Anxiety/stress
  • Low self-esteem
  • Sexuality
  • Lack of confidence
  • Domestic violence
  • Rape/assault
  • Abuse survivors
  • PMT/menopause
  • Body image
  • Life choices
  • Divorce

These are just a few examples of the issues counselling can help with, so don't be put off if you would like to see a counsellor about something not mentioned here.

"Without WHAC I don't know where I would have been now. My life is back on track and I'm happy again which I never thought would be possible." WHAC Counselling client

How can I make an appointment?

Women are referred by GPs, CPNs, Health Visitors, Social Workers or other organisations, both statutory and voluntary.

You can also contact us yourself to make an appointment for an assessment where you will have the opportunity to see if the Centre meets your needs. The counsellor will explain more about this during your assessment which will last up to an hour. Following your assessment you will then be offered weekly appointments with your own counsellor.
